The Outbreak of the First World WarThe immediate spark that started World War I was the assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie on June 28, 1914 while they were visiting in Sarajevo, Bosnia. They were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a 19 year old Serbian who was a member of the Black Hand (a terrorist organization dedicated to the independence of Serbia).
